HISTORIC STATE THEATER

238 EAST SHERIDAN ST, ELY MN
OPENED: 1936

ARCHITECT: LIEBENBERG AND KAPLAN
WEBSITE: https://movies.elystatetheater.org/
The State Theater was built by the Swanson family and opened in 1936. It was designed by Twin Cities architectural firm Liebenberg and Kaplan. The theater closed in 2008 and was put up for sale. In 2014, it was purchased and a six year restoration began, cumulating with a reopening the summer of 2020.
The Ely State Theater holds a special place in my heart. We had been following its restoration over the years, as the theater was designed by Liebenberg and Kaplan. Mere weeks after they had reopened, they were gracious enough to allow us to come in for our photo shoot. A truly amazing theater with an extremely dedicated group leading the return of the movies to Ely, MN! I cannot recommend this gem of Northern Minnesota highly enough!
